Interior expert reveals top design tips to perfect the Parisian style

With the 2024 Olympics having been held in Paris and the popular Netflix series Emily in Paris back for season 4, France’s capital city is at the heart of many mainstream conversations. The City of Love is known for many things such as its culture, food, and art - as well as its iconic architecture and interior style.
For those inspired to incorporate some Parisian influence within their space, Catherine Jacob, Head of Design, at Hovia has conducted her top five design tips to perfect the French look. 

The iconic Parisian interior style incorporates neutral and earthy tones to craft spaces that are both chic and welcoming. Parisian interiors typically include a palette of whites, beiges, and light greys. These colours enhance natural light and make spaces feel more open while earthy tones such as warm browns, terracottas, and muted greens are used to add depth and warmth. Earthy colours are often incorporated through wallpaper, furniture, and decor. By using both tones in a thoughtful and balanced manner, Parisian interiors achieve a timeless elegance that feels both luxurious and down-to-earth.

Parisian interiors often incorporate wall panelling to achieve a sophisticated, elegant, and timeless look. Pannelings are typically painted in soft, neutral tones like white, cream, or pastel shades to highlight the carvings and decorative mouldings. It’s important to make sure your panelling compliments the rest of your wall space as well as your flooring and furnishings. 

Herringbone flooring is a staple Parisian choice. Not only does it have its aesthetic appeal, it’s also practical. Herringbone is a durable flooring option that can withstand the test of time - perfect if you’re regularly hosting parties and accommodating guests. Parisian buildings often have high ceilings, large windows, and intricate mouldings - the herringbone pattern compliments these architectural features, enhancing the overall coherence of the living space.

There are many ways you can introduce both modern and mid-century styles to your Parisian-inspired space.
