Has interior design stolen fashion’s thunder?
As the gorgeously glamorous second installment of And Just Like That ends (sob), modern wallpaper brand, Hovia can’t help but wonder… has interior design stolen fashion’s thunder?
Sure, every episode was yet another pageant of fabulous tulle, two-piece suits, and t-shirts that probably cost more than a long weekend on the Champs-Élysées. However, the design and decor of the iconic living spaces stole a lot more of the limelight in Season 2.
We saw Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and their posses spending way more time kicking back and entertaining at home than ever before, so we got treated to much bigger glimpses into how they style their (not so) humble abodes.
Ahead of Season 3 of the Sex and the City reboot, Hovia delves into the fresh focus on the characters’ living quarters and how the wallpaper and wall decor are so representative of them and their fashion.
First up, of course, is Carrie’s apartment and Carrie’s apartment 2.0.
The OG Upper East Side brownstone that we’ve known and loved for…forever embodies her fun, free, and flirty side. Large floral prints in vibrant colors give that main character energy, encapsulate her youth, and parallel her extravagant, flamboyant, and unorthodox approach to fashion. Dopamine decor to match her dopamine dressing; spikes of serotonin for single girls everywhere.
Carrie’s stunning new Gramercy Park apartment, on the other hand, with its five floors, five bedrooms, and three bathrooms, marks a new chapter for Ms. Bradshaw. This is where (so far) Carrie plans to settle down and leave her turbulent dating days at the door once and for all, which is reflected in the sophisticated, grown-up look and feel of the space. White wall paneling, gold accents, lofty ceilings, and chic minimalism represent a whole new era of class for Carrie.
Let’s just hope her walk-in closet stays as charmingly chaotic as ever.
Next, we have Charlotte’s beloved Park Avenue apartment—a grand, luxurious family home that belongs on the covers of glossy magazines, minus the sad-eyed British bulldog (sorry, Richard Burton).
The celestial-style wallpaper in Charlotte’s hallway, which is complemented by gilded frames and gold hardware, sets the opulent tone immediately. She’s a classy lady who wants to make a flawless first impression, so why would her interior decor be any other way?
In Charlotte’s living space and dining room, we see big, blousy floral prints reflective of the soft, innocent, feminine energy we adore her for. Unlike Carrie’s ostentatious florals, Charlotte’s are composed and romantic—wallpaper worthy of a woman who would simply never use the F-word wearing Vera Wang.
In Season 2, Miranda’s comings and goings make her more nomadic than the others. She winds up staying with Dr. Nya Wallace for a stint after the two strike up a friendship at Columbia Law School.
Nya lives in a bohemian Brooklyn loft apartment that has the trendy, industrial aesthetic down to a fine art. Exposed brick walls make for the perfect backdrop for this no-make-up make-up kind of character who is effortlessly cool and the archetypal modern Brookylnite.
Quite the opposite of real estate broker and wealthy widow, Seema Choudhury (speculated to be the ‘new Samantha’) who befriended Carrie back in Season 1. Seema swathes herself and her home in fine fabrics, luxe accessories, and has a penchant for Art Deco motifs and voguish Georgian-style wall paneling. Oh, and charming action movie directors in well-tailored suits and silk neck scarves, it seems.
Last but by no means least is the formidable Lisa Todd Wexley with the walk-in-closet-come-home-office to end all walk-in-closet-come-home-offices. Documentarian, mother of three, and all-round boss b*tch, it comes as no surprise that she’s partial to a chic neutral color palette and refined design scheme that’s as perfectly put-together as her wardrobe.
And just like that, we’re ready to give our own homes a complete makeover while we wait for Season 3 to hit the screens. Will it be a statement floral wall mural a la Carrie or Charlotte, or a cool faux surface wallpaper you’d find on Dr. Nya Wallace’s Pinterest board? Either way, it’s important to remember that trends come and go, but friendships never go out of style…
