UK design brand Hovia unveils first-of-its-kind AR wallpaper

This autumn, interiors innovator Hovia introduces Boogie, the first augmented-reality wallpaper design of its kind.

Starring various relatable characters, each with their own signature dance moves, the design combines the latest decor trends with accessible tech - resulting in a playful interactive product.

Where tech meets decor: Boogie Multi styled as part of a disco-themed bedroom

Hovia created the augmented reality wallpaper design using the rotoscope animation technique viewed via a bespoke Instagram effect built in Meta Spark. Rotoscoping is the process of splitting video footage into individual frames, drawing over each of the individual frames before removing the video, leaving an animation that moves in a very true-to-life way. The complete animation sequence took over 5 weeks and consisted of 645 individual drawings.

Boogie designer, Jessica, studied Illustration with Animation at university and is passionate about bringing tech and decor together:

Enabling people to create spaces that bring them joy is our biggest motivator at Hovia, and the Boogie concept is the start of something exciting for us. I'd love to create kids' wallpapers with an interactive element; AR really lends itself to that kind of product. I love the idea of a mural that a kid can hold their iPad in front of, and it comes to life. What a cool thing to be able to show their friends!

Augmented reality has become a mainstay of interior design, allowing the designer and architect to convey concepts to clients via immersive experiences. According to WGSN, the extended reality (XR) market, comprising virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR), is booming. It was worth almost $28bn in 2021 and is set to hit more than $250bn by 2028.

In the UK, the ever-growing mainstream popularity of XR in the decor space is evident from the airing of UK shows such as Your Home Made Perfect on BBC 2. Hovia is taking the lead on exploring how accessible tech offers new opportunities for home decor, starting with Boogie, the first-ever AR wallpaper.

The design is available now in three colourways: muted black and white, contemporary colourful, and muted pastel, exclusively at Hovia.
