The colours, the costumes, the symmetry, the compositions, and so much more. The director is known for his instantly recognisable style, which some people call formalism. To achieve a modern, charmingly quirky interior that feels 'accidentally Wes Anderson', Lauren Kavanagh, Art Director at Hovia, lists her top styling tips to leave you feeling like you've stepped onto set:
- 'Put your statement furniture piece, such as a velvet couch, up against the very centre of the widest wall. Or, in the centre of the room with other decor either side in the background.'
- 'For the colour palette, the main players are baby pink, bright aqua, apple green or fern green, rust orange, firetruck red and canary yellow. Mix and match, and try colour-drenching an area of the room.'
- 'Incorporate grand and interesting elements like patterns, panelling, chandeliers and different textures where possible.'
- 'Eclectic and eccentric details are a must, like books galore, collections of trinkets and tchotchkes, and curated colour schemes of "retro" tones'.
- 'Don't be afraid to have things very pared-back in some areas. Go for symmetry, keep the decorations to a minimum, and use subtle block colours.'
