Weirdcore and Funky Decor are the emerging interior trends being adopted by Gen Z and Boomers.
Pinterest explains why in their report:
During lockdowns, people needed new ways to express themselves creatively without leaving home. So, they turned their bedrooms into creative havens and experimented with aesthetics such as ‘weirdcore decor.’ This form of maximalist self-expression will only continue to rise in the year ahead.
This trend encourages people to be experimental with their interior design choices — going bigger and bolder with euphoric colours and whimsical patterns.
The funky decor style makes use of quirky shapes and motifs like wiggly lines, checkerboard patterns, bright and blocky colours and imaginative shapes.
In interior design, it's best characterised by disco ball decor, mushroom motifs, odd and kitsch items that feel nostalgic or personal, and clashing colours.
How to embrace the weirdness
Use uplifting colours like pinks and oranges. You can also bring in any complimentary colours like greens to add more variety.
Fun themes are emerging: the term "playful" has risen by 1 percentage point every year since 2019. This includes bright colours, bold icons and heavy use of fabrics.
