Hovia commits to offsetting more carbon emissions and urges customers to seek out sustainable options.
In its Green Friday campaign, Hovia shines a light on the environmental impact of Black Friday, and pledges to offset twice the amount of carbon for orders placed on its sites from 25 to 30 November.
Global carbon dioxide emissions are estimated to be at an all-time high with 36.6btn released into the environment in 2022. The EU will see a 0.8% drop in gas usage associated with lower demand and the ongoing issue in Ukraine, while the US will likely see an increase of 1.5% this year.
Here are two statistics about the annual consumer event you need to know:
- 80% of items bought on Black Friday are reportedly thrown away after 1 use or less
- Black Friday deliveries were predicted to release as much as 429,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the United Kingdom alone. This is the equivalent to 435 return flights from London to New York
But it’s not all doom and gloom:
- eBay predicts 52% of people will be shopping second-hand this year
- This shift in behaviour could reduce carbon emissions by 1.5 million tonnes

Hovia has been carbon neutral since 2020. This means the company takes the same amount of carbon out of the atmosphere that it emits by investing in carbon offsetting projects and working with DHL GoGreen, which ‘minimises and/or avoids logistics-related emissions, waste and other environmental impacts along its entire supply chain’.
Its portfolio of carbon offsetting projects consists of forest protection, peatland restoration, methane avoidance through waste management, and fruit tree re-vegetation across South America, Africa and Asia.
Hovia provides sustainable and planet-friendly wallpaper options, using FSC-certified paper, low waste production and non-toxic inks and toners, creating durable, long-lasting wall coverings. Every design is made-to-order and shipped in 100% plastic free packaging.
